Crystal River is manatee country, a stretch of Florida’s Nature Coast where the springs run 72 degrees year-round and the Gulf still feels genuinely wild. Cracker’s has been sitting on the edge of Kings Bay since 1986, which means it predates most of the chain restaurants that have since colonized the rest of the state. The waterfront deck overlooks the bay, the seafood is fresh, and the live music on Friday nights fits the mood perfectly, think someone playing Floridays-era Jimmy Buffett while a manatee does absolutely nothing interesting 50 yards away. The redfish sandwich gets mentioned in nearly every review. Accessible by land or boat, and the crowd skews heavily toward people who actually live here rather than people just passing through. In a state that’s increasingly hard to read as authentic, Cracker’s still is.
