San Leon is a peninsula that sticks out into Galveston Bay and mostly gets ignored in favor of the boardwalk at Kemah fifteen minutes north. Topwater Grill opened out here on May 27, 1999, at April Fool Point Marina, and the thing that separates it from every other bay-view seafood place is that they own and run their own shrimp and oyster boats. You can also bring in what you caught and they will cook it. The patio has gliders on it and looks straight down the bay. No reservations, first come first served, which sorts out who really wants to be here. Between the marina, the boats, and an address on Avenue O, this is about as close as Houston gets to a real fishing-town bar.
