San Leon’s oldest bar has been open better than fifty years, sitting on 1st Street over by Mooner Beach on the Galveston Bay side. It is a dive by every measure and cheerfully so: ice-cold cans, cheap liquor, and no interest in anybody’s opinion about the decor. San Leon has a reputation on the upper Texas coast as the place where the bay still belongs to shrimpers and the people who like it that way, and this bar is the clubhouse. It is not on the tourist circuit and there is no reason it ever should be. Come in off the water, get a beer, and understand that if you are the loudest person in the room you are doing it wrong.
