Jack Bahrs bought a beached houseboat in Highlands in 1917 and started cooking chowder for fishing parties who came down on the train from Jersey City. That was the beginning. A century later, Bahrs Landing is still family-owned — Ray and Jay Cosgrove are the fourth-generation great-grandsons of the founders — and Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio once ate lobster dinners here, which is the kind of history a bar either has or doesn’t. The dockside tiki bar overlooks Sandy Hook Bay with the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge visible on clear days. Order the lobster. It’s what people have been doing here for over 100 years.
