The Causeway is a seven-mile ribbon of road laid across the top of Mobile Bay in 1926, and the Original Oyster House has been the place you stop on it since 1985. Two stories, water on both sides, a boat dock, and the detail everybody actually remembers: they bring you the ketchup and the horseradish and you mix your own cocktail sauce. The gumbo has won things. Hurricane Katrina gutted the original Causeway building in 2005 and the restaurant moved a few miles east rather than quit. Because it sits right on the Mobile and Baldwin county line, it has spent four decades as the neutral ground where people from both sides of the bay agree to meet. Sunset over the bay from the upstairs windows is the reason to time your arrival.
