Down the canals from Burdines, Castaway Waterfront is Marathon’s unexpected combination of waterfront Keys bar and legitimate sushi restaurant, and it does both better than it has any right to. The outdoor tiki bar faces the water with a casual come-as-you-are energy, while inside, fresh sushi and raw bar offerings made with locally caught fish attract a crowd that knows the difference. It’s also one of the few restaurants in the Keys that specializes in lionfish dishes, an invasive species you’re doing the reef a favor by eating. A genuine local hidden gem with more depth than the setting suggests.
