Down the canals from Burdines, Castaway Waterfront is Marathon’s unexpected combination of waterfront Keys bar and legitimate sushi restaurant — and it does both better than it has any right to. The outdoor tiki bar faces the water with a casual come-as-you-are energy, while inside, fresh sushi and raw bar offerings made with locally caught fish attract a crowd that knows the difference. It’s also one of the few restaurants in the Keys that specializes in lionfish dishes — an invasive species you’re doing the reef a favor by eating. A genuine local hidden gem with more depth than the setting suggests.
