There’s salt water, docks, boats of all shapes and sizes, ice cold beer and tropical drinks on the menu – what more could you need?
A beach, some might say. Well, if you look across the water, there’s a sandy beach! Booyah!
The Full Truth
Ok, adhering to the strict definition, it’s not a bar on a beach. But in every other way, this is a classic beach bar. The menu is resplendent with boozy, tropical drinks, the marina view is hard to argue with, and who doesn’t love a weathered dock under your feet?
Tucked away down an unassuming side street in Gloucester Point, Virginia (where?), YROC is heavy on locals, sailors and hardy marine scientists from the nearby Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMs). Chat up one of the latter and prepare for some pretty interesting stories about catching great white sharks and days at sea with unshowered associates (don’t ask me how I know).
The vibe is very laid back, the staff embodies all that is great about Southern hospitality, and the food is on point.
Insider Tips:
- There are quite a few seats that get exposed when the sun sets, so be aware of that when being seated. Some of your party might be staring in the sunset and/or sun pounding on people’s backs.
- Most of the outdoor seats are covered, and there is a second seating area (mostly hightops) that is fully covered, but a bit further away from the water
- There are outdoor heaters for chilly days and nights
- There is a full bar and seating area inside in case the weather really doesn’t cooperate
Beach Bar Bum’s Prime Seat:
If the sun is cooperating, any of the seats next to the water’s edge are ideal. If it’s hot or the sun is setting, you may want to opt for the second row, as it’s fully covered and will cut back on the heat or glare.
