Two hundred years ago, this building was treating patients: a Dutch colonial-era Ayurvedic hospital on Sri Lanka’s south coast, all thick walls and shaded verandas built for the tropics. A couple of Aussies with zero hospitality experience and a good sense of humor bought the place and turned it into Madiha Beach’s best-known bar, keeping the bones of the old hospital and adding wood-fired pizzas, a surf shop, and what they’ll happily tell you are the coldest beers on the island. Wednesday and Saturday nights are the ones to circle: live music, DJs, and a crowd that pulls from every surf town on the south coast, since nothing else out here comes close. The bar closes at 10pm sharp, which somehow makes the whole thing feel more precious, not less. Sri Lanka’s south coast has plenty of beach bars. It only has one former hospital.
