The Ship Inn is a very small pub tucked into a horseshoe of whitewashed former fishermen’s cottages around a village green at Low Newton-by-the-Sea, with trestle tables out front facing the Northumberland sand. Dunstanburgh Castle is down the beach from you.
In March 2008 the owners spent nine months converting their garage into a brewery, and the pub has been self sufficient in real ale ever since. The beer gets rolled roughly ten feet from brewery to cellar. Something like twenty brews have come out of it, among them Sandcastles at Dawn, Dolly Daydream and Sea Coal, a dark wheat beer.
There is no customer parking. You leave the car at the top of the hill and walk down, which is a better arrival anyway. Book ahead in summer, because a pub this size fills fast and the crab sandwiches have a following.
