Old Man’s didn’t name itself after some grizzled beach bum. It’s named after the surf break parked directly out front, a gentle, sandy-bottomed right that’s launched more first-time surfers than any other wave on Bali. Opened in 2014, back when Canggu was still cows and rice paddies, Old Man’s grew into the island’s original beach bar while the rest of the neighborhood built up around it. Aussie artist Lucas Grogan’s electric-blue murals wrap the thatch-roofed pavilion, bean bags spill across the lawn, and the daily sunset crowd stretches from surfers still dripping wet to backpackers who wandered in for one Bintang. Wednesdays mean beer pong and a “dirty disco.” Sundays mean DJs at 5pm sharp. This is Canggu’s original hangout, and it hasn’t lost a step.
