A California Point of Historical Interest on the cliffs above the Pacific in Moss Beach, the Distillery began in 1927 as Frank’s Place, a Prohibition-era speakeasy where Canadian rum-runners landed whiskey on the beach below under cover of fog, where Dashiell Hammett was a regular and used it as the setting for one of his detective stories, and where silent film stars and San Francisco politicians drank illegally with impunity. Today it is a full-service restaurant and bar with spectacular Pacific Ocean views and the resident ghost of the Blue Lady, a young woman allegedly murdered on the beach in the 1930s whose apparition has been documented by Unsolved Mysteries and is still reportedly seen near the cliffs. The Blue Lady cocktail is the house signature; the history and the view are the reason to make the drive.
