The idea for Zanzibar’s most famous party actually started in a Finnish forest. Friends there used to gather under August moons to dance around bonfires, and in 1996 Kendwa Rocks borrowed the concept and planted it on the white sand of Kendwa Beach, on the island’s northwest tip. What began as one moonlit beach bash with acrobats and drums has grown into a monthly institution that pulls thousands from every corner of the globe: Maasai dancers, fire performers, and DJs spinning Afrobeats and house until sunrise, all against the warm Indian Ocean breeze. On non-Full Moon nights, the hotel’s beachfront bar still throws a solid party, with a bonfire lit every single sunset. Kendwa’s deep water keeps the beach swimmable all day, which is exactly why the north coast anchors Zanzibar’s entire nightlife scene. Nearly thirty years in, this is still the party that started it.
