Curlies started as a single tiny shack on Anjuna Beach back when the area’s biggest export was hippies bartering their belongings at what’s now the legendary Wednesday flea market. Widely credited as the first beach shack ever built in Goa, Curlies has spent decades expanding into a sprawling two-story complex without losing the counterculture DNA that put Anjuna on the map in the 1960s, when wanderers like “Eight Finger Eddie” first turned this stretch of Arabian Sea coastline into a psychedelic-trance pilgrimage site. Today it runs restaurants, a rooftop lounge, an indoor club, and a sea-facing veranda that fills up for sunset. Next door, sister venue Shiva Valley throws the Tuesday trance parties that keep the old spirit alive till sunrise. Curlies isn’t trying to be cool. It already was, before cool had a name.
