The Beach Bar Bum Says:

Feet in the sand, ice cold beers, a giant palapa – and swings?? It’s like they don’t want me to ever leave.

Although the swing idea became a great deal more hazardous as the day went on. Let’s just say physics and cerveza have a complicated relationship. But I digress.

The Full Story

Isla Mujeres hits you immediately: the color of the water alone is enough to make you forget your name. The Mexican answer to Key West, this is a fun little island that is literally dotted with beach bars. Many – like Buho’s – are in the sand and feature sweeping views of beautiful blue water. There is seating inside the palapa as well as outside (and beds!), but if you know about the Mexican sun, you know that a brief respite in the shade is a welcome break. The great part is that even the interior of the palapa is all sand, so you get that beach experience even as you dodge the rays.

The food looks great, they offer massages (hopefully that explains the beds) and there were rumors of yoga somewhere on-site. As a Bum whose yoga practice begins and ends with reaching for a beer, that wasn’t an option I investigated. Otra cerveza, por favor!

Beach Bar Bum’s Prime Seat:

It all depends on where you are for the day in terms of your drink level. Still getting started? Grab a swing and enjoy. Had a few? The swing is no longer your friend; opt for a bench at the bar, and as always, one that faces the ocean.
